Principal Partner Practice of St. James's Place Wealth Management
I have spent over 20 years providing financial guidance and advice to a range of business and private clients many of whom I can now happily call friends.
They tell me that there are two main concerns when choosing a financial adviser.
Will I like them?
Can I trust them?
My answer to the first question is - who knows? I guess the chemistry either works or it doesn't. However, there is no point providing personal services if you are not a 'people person' which I am. Further I am not afraid to ask the tough questions or tell you if your aspirations are unachievable.
Most people instinctively know after the first meeting if they are the right fit or not.
Can I trust them?
It is taken as read these days that advisers have professional qualifications and adhere to certain standards - so this question perhaps really should be 'will the adviser put my interests first?'
My way of working means that we will spend a lot of time initially getting to know you, understanding your current lifestyle, hopes, fears and aspirations for the future and putting this down in writing in a Financial Plan. This may take some time but it is an important document that we will keep referring back to at our review meetings.
Once we have a financial plan then the advice is made easier and importantly is specific to you.
In recent years I have found myself working closely with business owners who are interesting because they have two sets of needs.
As a business owner we will discuss - Profit extraction, tax reduction, exit strategies*, shareholder or Key man protection, cross option agreements, investments, pensions (including Auto Enrolment) and flexible benefits.
At the end of the day the business owner will go home and become a spouse/partner, parent/grandparent etc and have similar but separate needs regarding their finances.
I enjoy the work that I do and feel making a difference to people's lives is time well spent.
The value of an investment with St. James's Pace will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select and the value may go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances
*Exit strategies may include the referral to a service that is separate and distinct to those offered by St. James's Place.
